Cayo Coco

Cayo Coco got its own international airport in 2003 so the 90 minutes coach journey from Ciego de Avila will become about 20 minutes!

The nearest large town to the Cayos is Moron. This is included in the ‘Colourful Cub’ tour and not to be missed.

Both islands were made famous by Ernest Hemingway in ‘Islands in the Stream’ -written whilst the great man spent a couple of years protecting Cuba from invasion in his dinghy.

The beach at Sol Club is spectacular! During our 4 weeks there we have never failed to find loungers. To lie on the beach for hours, walking into a turquoise ocean every now and then, the temperature of a decent bath, and play with the fish…..

Paragliding takes place all day from the beach and local men run a boat to the coral reef twice a day for $18. Ffor a bit of excitement, you can go snorkelling in the bay next door and watch the fish in just a metre of water.

We saw just one jellyfish, no accidents and lots of spectacular electrical storms. We snorkelled over the coral reef and watched barracuda glide past underneath us. Wandered into the beach bar at lunchtime for another drink and some fruit and ice-cream before a game of volleyball or a salsa lesson with the excellent entertainment team.

Yep– it’s pretty near to those famous chocolate bar ads!

Cuba Links

Cayo Coco is an island 27km off the north coast of Cuba. Part of the Archipelago de Sabana-Camaguey , together with Cayo Guillermo, it is reached by a causeway from the mainland. Something of an

environmental disaster, the causeway is causing problems with tidal flow and

displacing 30,000 flamingoes. There are plans to change the design to allow the sea to flow more freely by cutting huge holes.

The hotels are clustered along the northern coast of both islands and can be seen clearly on the map above. (Large image)

Sol Club and Sol Melia are next to each other. The latter seems to cater mostly for continental European guests and the Sol Club for British families.

The El Senador is Canadian and the Tryp Cayo Coco is at the higher end of the expense league. It was the first to open (by Fidel himself.)

On Cayo Guillermo the Sol group has another 2 hotels. The pricing by JMC in Britian encourages families to the Sol Club and couples to Cayo Guillermo. Because Cayo Guillermo is linked to Cayo Coco, all excursions will take 30 minutes longer from there. See the map.
